Ben Martin, the son of Renita Caldwell, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma - a cancerous brain tumor on April 23, 2009. Since then, Ben has been in and out of the hospital and has undergone several brain surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. For a short time, he was doing well and was in good spirits, despite his condition. However, at the beginning of September, the tumor returned with a vengeance and is now near the brain stem. Doctors do not feel he is a candidate for further surgeries so the family is seeking alternative treatment at the Burzinski Clinic in Texas (see www.burzynskiclinic.com). Because this is an alternative treatment center, the family's insurance will not cover the costs. It is urgent, that we, as a community, come together to help the family raise the money needed as soon as possible, to assist the family in paying for the treatment. This is Ben's window of opportunity, we need to help him.
Ben is a happy-go-lucky 8 year old who has many friends that care about him. He also has a brother and two sisters who are affected by this as they watch their little brother go through such harsh treatments. WDIV (channel 4) was at Ben's school, Meadowbrook Elementary, on 10/9/09 to do a story on Ben to raise awareness of his condition and to thank the students for their fundraising efforts (they collected $2,500!). WDIV was so captivated by Ben, that they arranged for one of their affiliate stations in Houston, TX, to follow his treatment once he gets there.
